A story about Georgia O'Keefe

OK so this is another person I will never meet. She’s pretty much my artist hero- or heroine. She created a style that was pretty original and mostly her own, she shucked the gender biased system of her day and her family, she basically did what she wanted to or felt she must do. And at a time when american art was pretty nondescript and blase. Her studio was the trunk of her car, her marriage also shucked the standard belief (though I don’t think I could’ve just ignored a philandering hubby and love him regardless…). Plus she had a majorly young lover when she was in her seventies as well as continued creating amazing works of art up til her death. She basically didn’t give a shit what people thought, did what she felt was right, and yes, I respect that!

If any of the readers of this story by “cleverclever” saw the PBS documentary/interview with Georgia O’Keefe in her old age they may remember that O’Keefe said that that her artistic ‘existence’ was due to Steiglitz and that when he died she was grateful for the money from his estate that allowed her to move to New Mexico and paint full-time.

I would gather that they had some very large connection that I doubt I would ever understand. Obviously, it didn’t bother her and they had something beyond standard criteria in a relationship.
I don’t watch television so did not see this interview, but it does sound interesting.

Your response to my comment was more generous than I deserved.
Another fascinating artistic relationship was that between Frieda and Diego Rivera (they married TWICE). This has been so interpreted to suit the latest prejudices that it is difficult to know what really happened.

“Wings of Desire” is SO magical, and then the sudden appearance of Peter Falk! I saw him once at Al’s Deli in Beverly Hills, ordering a cigar (“SEEgarr”) at the cash register. Same voice, same squint, same guy you see in the film.

Deerflat, I’m flattered that you have said you wanted to meet me, but I’m not sure why. I would like to hear a little more about you!

About wanting to meet I pushed the wrong key or something (I do not understand what this site is about actually). I have a woman friend, a landscape painter, who sometimes paints with her easel set up in her VW camper. I was trying to find a picture of O’Keefe painting from the back of her car and found your story. But meanwhile I really enjoyed your comments and sensitivity and wrote a couple of things in response to these. I am a photographer (more of a printmaker these days) and wish I could send you my website but I do not want to post it on the comments page. I have attached my Christmas card image and some fluff (good fluff) by Ezra Pound. Stay warm.
